It was an absolute privilege and an honour when Lady Emma (Barnard, chatelaine of Parham) asked me if I would like to be their first Artist in Residence and work for a year at Parham House and Gardens.
I started my residency in May 2017 and began by simply walking around the grounds and parkland. I needed to absorb the atmosphere of the environment and landscape.
Parham is just such an extraordinary place, there are so many areas I could have worked and painted so just wanted to focus on a few areas
What I love about Parham is the contrast. The beautiful mellows stone house and walls of the walled garden set against the soft planting. The gardeners use texture and the palette of the plants so beautifully. I felt they were painting the borders with the flowers and shrubs and my hope was to capture that spirit in my work.
I concluded my year at Parham with a solo exhibition entitled
‘Distilling The Spirit of Parham’
in ‘The Seed Room’ ,
